The Orb
I was first introduced to AlexPaterson’s (LX's) music back in the late eighties on a Monday night in a dark room whilst being blasted by a row of large industrial fans upstairs at the Land of Oz, Heaven nightclub London. I was mesmerized by the sound; it was in complete contrast to the thumping music playing downstairs on the dance floor but somehow strangely related and just as intense. Bright lights masked the two figures playing tune after tune, soundtracks of dub and a swirl of electronica. It wasn't until a few years later that I had the chance to meet Alex himself on the dance floor at an after-party in Brighton. By that time I had started following his music and remember being quite nervous as I mustered the courage to go over and speak to him. I told him that I had invented some speakers that were inspired by his music and designed to play it. I also told him that I wanted to meet and show him. I'll always be thankful for Alex not dismissing me and instead giving me his number. We set up a meeting in London, and like a dream turning to reality Alex was one of the first people to buy a set of HousePods. Most importantly a great friendship was forged. Alex is a fountain of music. The music he has shared always takes me to far away places and allows me to travel without movement. It has always been my creative soundtrack and one I always share with other people. He is such a talented individual, wise and full of mystery, music and mischief. A legend and national treasure. It is an honor to create things for the Orb and I was given a lot of freedom to go deep with the motif and imagery over the projects. Follow the Orb.

The Orb and David Gilmour
The Metallic Spheres project has allowed the visual artist to be fused with the music. The Vinyl and CD canvases for the music within offer glorious gatefolds, inner sleeves, and even posters adorned with inspirational imagery as the accompaniment. These are rare, except for independents making a statement reserved these days for packing the best of and greatest hits or re-releases. This project has gone one step further with the buzz of AI.
We stand in a new era. With the role of the artist seemingly sidelined in the digital age to providing small postage stamps as a visual accompaniment to the musician's feast, a blip next to an ever-consuming slew of autoplay tracks, a bold move has arrived with the release of Metallic Spheres in Colour This is not just another album but a bold and innovative project that redefines the relationship between music and visual art.
Imagine remixing the tracks from the album, shaping them to match your mood and artistic vision. Metallic Spheres in Colour offers this unique opportunity. You can create personal artwork, which you can download as part of a cohesive project reflecting your individuality.
Riding the AI juggernaut and perhaps providing it to a new audience, and taking a Metallic Sphere as a canvas, you, the listener, are encouraged to describe feels as you listen to the album Metallic Spheres in Colour and watch written words manifest and morph into alchemic versions of the cover. The artwork collects in a viewing gallery, and your creation is available for download, with all the other manifestations.

Blue Room Released Years
In the early nineties, the legend of a US top-secret facility that allegedly housed alien artifacts from UFO crashes and ancient sites inspired me to create the Blue Room design identity. Its imagination gave birth to Pods and loudspeakers reimagined and inspired by the electronic music revolution. In keeping with the love of music being central to Blue Room's motivation, Blue Room Released became the record label and media front for the Loudspeakers, connecting it to the forefront of musical innovation courtesy of an assembled global roster of talented electronic music artists. It also reinforced a paramount allegiance to music, placing the hardware with the software.
From a visual and storytelling perspective, the record label was remarkably successful at carrying the mystique around the Blue Room identity. It allowed new mediums such as the website, merchandise and the many record covers, to visually manifest and explore a window into the psyche of the Blue Room. Although related, its fluid and contemporary visual narrative leaped from how we presented the Minipod..
The organized events and music allowed people to access the Blue Room environment through meaningful experiences. The events themselves became little worlds assembled, richly decorated and sonically transformed by the passion and dedication of teams of people who loved music.

Signs of Life
Blue Room Released's Signs of Life was a project that enabled me to explore another subject that provided much intrigue and mystique. The Crop Circle phenominum. Crop Circles had a legacy of appearance in the UK that stretched further back than the press reports of the late eighties and much folklore attuned to the paranormal, fertile ground for the imagination. Their symbology had grown and developed in the nineties, and some sites were baffling, complex, and hugely large-scale, stretching miles. Their symbolism was both powerful and sometimes unique. I reached out to Steve and Karen Alexander at the time, who are world-renowned experts. Steve was responsible for aerial photography that captured England's emerging crop circle phenomenon. I met Steve during my research and met with him and his wife, Karen. Being submerged in their World was fascinating as they were both leading spokespeople.
I licensed and used lots of his images, giving them my own spin. I remember the first time I saw the original image to be used for the cover of the compilation' Signs of Life'. Signs of Life was my first true experiment in broadening the style of the sound of the Blue Room. It was a chance to take it back to the roots of the sound that first inspired me, the sounds of Alex Paterson and the Orb. We experimented with dub, electro, ambiance and breakbeat. The image I saw from Steve was unique to the many he had. For a start, it was field level and not aerial.
The weather in the image was also dramatic and contrasted with the light that lit up the field. The crop circle itself looked to me like a giant record. The only problem was the human activity within and around the circle. I worked on the image and, with my new knowledge of Photoshop, began meticulously and ironically removing all signs of life. I also removed objects such as houses from the background and the elements that made the sky and field. There was one solitary figure that intrigued me. The figure I left was a woman who strangely didn't look like she fit in with the rest of the people in the original image. For one, she seemed to be walking the circle when the others seemed stationary. There was an air to her presence that looked ambivalent, and removing the others in the image amplified her solitude and determination. She became an encapsulation or metaphor for Signs of Life, like a stylus traveling the long circular groove of life, symbolic of what we do trudging through life. Remarkably, I was told people never noticed her there when the photograph was taken, even more so when she was isolated, adding more to the mystery of the Crop Circle.

Blue Room Released Early Years
Our first release for Blue Room Released was a compilation compiled in consultation with DJ Mike Maquire from Juno Reactor called "Outside the Reactor"” The artwork gave me the opportunity to experiment with the medium of Kirlein photography, something that I had always wanted to do since my childhood, having been inspired by the memory from the covers of a weekly collectible magazine titled "The Unexplained"” I worked with renowned Electrographer Nigel Garion-Hutchings, founder of the Association of Registered Kirlian Electrographers, to produce the images. It was a fun day. The cover picture is actually taken using the solid silver Housepod badge and built up using just a few layers of the said photography. Matt Consume executed the sleeve design from Brighton.
The diversity of musician identities enabled some great collaborations and commissions with visual artists such as psychedelic painter "Brahma", who created the image used for the cover of "Saafi Brothers" and "The Infinity Project's Mystical Experiences". Renowned sleeve designers such as Andrew Sutton (responsible for the cover "Lazer Guided Melodies by Spiritualized"), worked on the original house bag design, while Richie Burridge (long time visual collaborator with Plaid) worked on the original Trip Through Sound, Etnica, Sun Kings, Saafi Brothers and Alien. In fact, the first collaborations were late nights spent with Richie working together on albums like Total Eclipse's Violent Relaxation, with Richie patiently working hard to incorporate my ideas and images with his own. In fact, I'm grateful for the patience of all the people I worked with in the early days. I was quite particular and protective of the Blue Room and always spent time adjusting people’s senses to its wavelength.
This was an important time for me as an artist and designer, as it is when I cut my teeth creating record covers, adverts, posters, merchandise and other visual imagery. In fact, you can see my progress just by looking at the swathe of material here. I started making the main images for each project and, as time progressed, learned design software to create the graphic design. I was very particular with the standard of music, its quality, and its visual look. I wanted it to inspire people and do justice to the artists it represented. I was hugely respectful of them and their passion, so I took great care in compiling track lists for compilations. Being at A&R gave me the opportunity to build some wonderful friendships, as our artists literally came from all over the World. Countries included England, France, Germany, Holland, Israel, Finland, Sweden and America.
As we progressed, I was able to learn and take on the complete artwork myself, starting with "Made On Earth." I wanted the cover to contrast with the digital music as a live installation, featuring the iconic Roland 101 musical keyboard in the preserve, isolated and submerged in water. Its trademark sound featured in many of the first waves of electronic dance records running visual themes with the compilations.
These were incredibly creative times, with many people becoming part of Blue Room and exponentially expanding its ability to deliver unique experiences through music, photography, artwork and events. The diversity of musical identities enabled some great psychedelic collaborations with designers, photographers and visual artists.
